GES Probes SHS Students’ Spiritual Amulets

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is investigating a disturbing video showing Senior High School (SHS) students from Sakafia Islamic Senior High School and Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi displaying charms they claim offer spiritual protection.
According to the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, the video has sparked widespread concern about student safety and discipline. He has directed the GES to take immediate action, stating, “I’ve forwarded the attached story and the associated disturbing video to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for action”.
The incident has reignited concerns about the rising levels of violence and indiscipline in SHS’s across the country. Dr. Apaak emphasized that the government will not tolerate acts of violence or indiscipline within Ghana’s educational institutions, saying, “We cannot accept violence in our schools and between students from different schools. We are determined to restore discipline in our educational system”.
The Deputy Minister also called on parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s upbringing and conduct, especially while they are in school. “Parents must take an interest in the behaviour of their wards in school,” he urged.
The restoration of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) is seen as a step towards strengthening cooperation between schools and parents. According to Dr. Apaak, “We restored PTAs because we believe parents have a crucial and collaborative role to play in the education of their wards, especially at the pre-tertiary level”.
The investigation aims to address the growing concerns about student conduct and safety in Ghana’s schools.
