Ofori-Atta Extradition Proceedings Commence in US

Extradition proceedings have commenced in the United States against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, according to the Office of the Special Prosecutor. The development was revealed in court on Thursday, February 26, during the hearing of the criminal case against Ofori-Atta and seven others.

According to the Office of the Special Prosecutor, two separate proceedings have been instituted against Ofori-Atta in the United States. The first relates to alleged immigration violations, which commenced in January 2026, while the second proceeding concerns Ghana’s formal extradition request seeking his return to stand trial.

The OSP informed the court that the United States Department of Justice has acknowledged receipt of the extradition package, and the charge sheet and summons in respect of Ofori-Atta have been transmitted to U.S. authorities. Ofori-Atta is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after an immigration judge denied his bail request.

The case against Ofori-Atta and others involves over 75 charges, including causing financial loss to the state, using public office for profit, and willful oppression. The charges are connected to the controversial revenue assurance contracts awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).

The court has adjourned the case to March 26, 2026, pending the outcome of the extradition proceedings and immigration matter in the United States. The OSP has assured the court that it is working with international partners to ensure that justice is served in a transparent and lawful manner.

The development has sparked significant attention, given Ofori-Atta’s prominent role in Ghana’s government and the implications of the case for governance and accountability.
