Ho Sports Stadium To Be Transformed- Prez Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has announced an ambitious plan to redevelop the Ho Sports Stadium into a state-of-the-art multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex, with the government aiming to complete the project in time for Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations in 2027.
The announcement was made during the President’s inspection tour of the stadium, where ongoing preparatory works are expected to pave the way for a comprehensive reconstruction of the facility to meet FIFA Category B standards.
For years, the Ho Sports Stadium has suffered significant challenges, including a deteriorating playing surface, periodic flooding and ageing spectator stands, factors that have limited its ability to host major national and international sporting events. The proposed redevelopment seeks to reverse this trend by transforming the venue into one of Ghana’s premier sporting facilities.
President Mahama described the stadium’s central location within the municipality and the availability of surrounding land as major advantages that make it ideal for large-scale expansion.
He explained that government will first allocate funding for the project, complete detailed architectural designs and engage residents and key stakeholders through public consultations before construction officially begins.
Beyond football, the President said the vision is to develop a year-round destination capable of hosting sporting competitions, conferences, concerts, exhibitions and other commercial events.
The redesigned complex is expected to feature retail shops, restaurants, entertainment centres and other commercial facilities to ensure continuous economic activity even when sporting events are not taking place.
“The objective is to create a facility that remains vibrant throughout the year rather than becoming active only during football matches,” the President indicated.
Plans for the upgraded stadium also include a modern natural grass playing surface supported by an automated irrigation system, improved spectator stands and infrastructure that satisfies Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements for hosting continental competitions.
President Mahama further disclosed that the redevelopment of the Ho Sports Stadium forms part of a broader national strategy to improve Ghana’s sporting infrastructure. The long-term vision includes developing at least five modern stadiums across the country capable of hosting major African football tournaments.
Strengthening sports infrastructure is essential not only for nurturing athletic talent but also for stimulating tourism, creating employment opportunities and promoting local economic development.
Residents and sports enthusiasts in the Volta Region have welcomed the announcement with great optimism, expressing hope that the project will restore Ho’s status as a key centre for sports development while creating new opportunities for businesses and young athletes to thrive.
Once completed, the modernized Ho Sports Stadium is expected to serve as a major sporting and entertainment destination, positioning the Volta Region to host high-profile national and international events and contributing significantly to Ghana’s sports development agenda.
