Police Intercept Massive Cache of AK-47 Ammunition and Bulletproof Vests Bound for Walewale

The Ghana Police Service has made a significant breakthrough, intercepting over 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and bulletproof vests destined for Walewale in the North East Region. The consignment was discovered in a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18, which was traveling from Accra to Paga via Walewale.

The interception occurred on December 26, 2025, at the Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region. Three suspects, including the bus driver, Kwame Afram, and his mate, Godfred Essel, were arrested during the operation. A third suspect, Mohammed Siisu, was later arrested in Walewale.

The police also recovered additional items, including two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots, suggesting the ammunition was meant for a potentially violent or criminal activity. The Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, ACP Cephas Arthur, assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify the source of the ammunition and track down possible accomplices.

The interception highlights the police’s commitment to preventing the illegal circulation of firearms and safeguarding national security. The authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police.

The Ghana Police Service has intensified security measures ahead of the New Year celebrations, assuring the public of their safety. Residents are advised to secure their homes and report any unusual activities to the police.

The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.
