Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), has reported to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) accompanied by his lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, for questioning over allegations of scholarship bribery. According to Joy News, Nkansah’s visit to the NIB follows President John Mahama’s directive to investigate claims of improper practices in awarding overseas scholarships.
The allegations surfaced after Nkansah alleged on Sompa FM that some government officials, including members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were selling scholarships for sums as high as GH¢100,000. The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat’s Director-General, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has denied the allegations, stating that scholarships are awarded based on merit and not sold to the highest bidder.
Nkansah’s claims have sparked widespread concern, prompting President Mahama to order an immediate investigation. “The President has directed the National Investigation Bureau to immediately investigate the allegation, establish its factual basis, identify any persons involved, and determine the veracity or otherwise of the claims made,” according to a statement from the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama.
The NIB is expected to submit its findings to the President for further consideration and action. The investigation aims to promote transparency and accountability in the awarding of scholarships, ensuring equal access to educational opportunities for all qualified Ghanaian students.
The outcome of the investigation is eagerly awaited, as it may shed light on the alleged irregularities in the scholarship award process. As the story unfolds, stakeholders are calling for a thorough and impartial investigation to restore trust in the system.
