AG Slams ORAL’s Recovery Target

AG Slams ORAL's $20.49bn Recovery Target as Unrealistic

Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has dismissed the Operations Recover All Loot (ORAL) Committee’s projection of retrieving $20.49 billion for the state as unrealistic and based on rough estimates.

According to GhanaWeb, Dr. Ayine stated that the figure was a back-of-the-envelope calculation by ORAL Committee Chairperson, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and not a precise or verified amount. He emphasized that recoveries must be based on thorough investigations, solid documentation, and due legal processes.

Dr. Ayine explained that the expectation of a $20 billion recovery places enormous pressure on his office, as the public now expects that amount to be delivered. He noted that while the amount could approach $20 billion if funds being pursued offshore are taken into account, the actual figure will depend on specific cases under investigation.

The ORAL Committee, established to recover looted state assets, had claimed to be handling about 36 cases and projected a potential recovery of $20.49 billion for the country. However, Dr. Ayine stressed that his office will pursue cases strictly on the basis of evidence and the rule of law.

According to Starr FM, Dr. Ayine made the comments on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, saying the projection has created unnecessary pressure on his office. He assured that the Attorney-General’s Office remains committed to upholding justice and securing credible convictions.

The Attorney-General’s stance has sparked interest in the ongoing efforts to recover looted state assets and combat corruption in Ghana.
