Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, has launched a blistering rebuke of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, alleging that the ex-treasury chief absconded from Ghana to evade intensifying legal scrutiny and prosecutorial investigations. The charge escalates political tensions surrounding accountability for past fiscal stewardship.
According to 3News, Mr. Bediako characterized the former minister’s absence as a deliberate maneuver to frustrate ongoing probes into contentious financial decisions undertaken during his tenure. The legislator contended that public officials must submit to due process rather than seek extraterritorial refuge, stressing that the rule of law demands parity regardless of previous office. He urged investigative agencies to deploy all lawful instruments, including international cooperation mechanisms, to secure the former minister’s participation in proceedings.
Ken Ofori-Atta presided over the Finance Ministry amid sovereign debt restructuring, revenue mobilization reforms, and contested procurement contracts that have since attracted parliamentary inquiries and anti-graft scrutiny. According to 3News, Mr. Bediako argued that the investigations transcend partisan rivalry and instead address fiduciary obligations owed to citizens burdened by austerity measures. He maintained that transparency in adjudicating such matters is essential to restoring institutional credibility and investor sentiment.
Legal practitioners observe that while Ghanaian jurisprudence permits trials in absentia under strict conditions, extradition remains the preferred pathway for ensuring comprehensive cross-examination and evidentiary testing. According to 3News, Mr. Bediako warned that perceived evasion could erode confidence in democratic accountability and embolden narratives of elite impunity. The Office of the Special Prosecutor has previously signaled interest in several transactions executed under the former minister’s watch.
The denunciation by the Akwatia lawmaker amplifies calls for expedited judicial action and sets the stage for a protracted confrontation over extraterritorial enforcement and political responsibility.
