At Ho, Wortoe Residents Decry Airport Exit Flooding

Construction on the Big Push Road corridor linking Sokode to Ho Airport has encountered hydrologic disruption, as the exit ramp at Maryland in Wortoe remains beleaguered by inundation despite ongoing works commenced prior to the rainy season. The deceleration lane, still under active development, has been overwhelmed by stormwater accumulation that breaches adjacent residential precincts and imperils livelihoods.
Although the contractor mobilized equipment and commenced earthworks before precipitation intensified, incomplete drainage appurtenances have left the carriageway vulnerable to ponding. According to Ewenyigba TV Reports, residents acknowledge the contractor’s preliminary exertions yet decry the absence of functional gutters, contending that interim channels have proved insufficient to divert runoff from cascading into domiciles. Their disquiet centers on structural compromise, sanitation hazards, and the prospect of further desolation should torrents persist.
The topographical gradients at Wortoe naturally funnel discharge toward the Maryland enclave, necessitating accelerated completion of culverts and side drains to forestall recurrent submergence. Community advocates are petitioning NADMO and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to institute emergency mitigation pending final works.
The Big Push initiative, designed to augment regional connectivity and aviation access, remains a strategic infrastructure undertaking within the Volta basin. Historically, the Ho Municipality has contended with seasonal flooding attributed to fragmented drainage masterplans and climatic volatility. Stakeholders maintain that harmonizing construction timelines with meteorological forecasts is imperative to prevent recurring inundation of unfinished alignments.
Resolution now hinges upon expedited execution of drainage components by the contractor and enhanced supervisory oversight by statutory agencies. Without immediate intervention, prolonged exposure to waterlogging risks compromising pavement integrity, escalating project costs, and eroding public confidence in the viability of the airport access route.
