The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has addressed the nation on the Ebola outbreak, declaring it an International Public Health Emergency. According to #3NewsGH, the Minister emphasized the need for collective action to combat the spread of the disease.
In his address, Minister Akandoh highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening laboratory systems, citing the crucial role they play in disease detection, patient management, and health security. He noted that effective laboratories are essential for swift outbreak containment and accurate diagnosis.
The Minister’s statement comes amidst concerns about the country’s readiness to tackle emerging infectious diseases, including Ebola, Marburg, cholera, and meningitis. Ghana has been working to enhance its laboratory resilience, integrating emerging technologies and promoting collaboration between scientists and policymakers.
Minister Akandoh has urged all stakeholders to work together to build laboratories capable of safeguarding the nation’s health. He emphasized that laboratory resilience is a non-negotiable pillar of health sector reform and the resetting agenda.
The government has been taking steps to improve its emergency response system, including the commissioning of the first Public Health Operations Response Centre at Pantang. This facility will use real-time data to guide decisions during disease outbreaks and other public health threats.
