Awerco Construction Limited, the contractor behind the Weija Paediatric Hospital project, has threatened legal action against the Ministry of Health over allegations of procurement irregularities, describing the claims as baseless and damaging to its reputation. According to #GHOneNews, the ministry had attributed delays in commissioning the hospital to unresolved payment issues and alleged procurement breaches.
The contractor, in a strongly-worded letter, demanded an immediate retraction and apology from the ministry within 24 hours, warning that it would pursue legal action if the request is not complied with. Awerco Construction Limited insists that it has fulfilled all contractual obligations and has not been provided with any evidence supporting claims of procurement irregularities.
The dispute stems from a ministry press release citing concerns over procurement processes, including allegations that medical equipment was overpriced by as much as 11 times their actual value. Awerco denies these allegations, stating that concerns allegedly raised by the World Bank were never formally communicated to it.
Awerco Construction Limited also disputed suggestions that it halted the commissioning process, arguing that its communications with the ministry focused on procedural handover issues and the need for essential protective systems to safeguard sensitive medical equipment. The contractor emphasized that delays in settling outstanding payments have affected mandatory end-user training, posing risks to equipment and patient safety.
The ministry’s claims have been met with rejection from Awerco Construction Limited, which maintains that it has done no wrong. The outcome of this dispute remains uncertain, with the contractor poised to take legal action if its demands are not met.
