Pregnant Students Sit for BECE Amidst Concerns

In a poignant display of resilience, 15 pregnant girls and 11 nursing mothers are among the candidates sitting for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Oti Region. According to #GhanaEducationService, the situation has sparked concerns about the welfare and support systems in place for these young mothers.
The Oti Regional Director of Education, Moses Ahiaglo, acknowledged the challenges faced by these students, emphasizing the need for collective support to ensure their success. “We are providing counseling and other forms of assistance to help them navigate this difficult period,” he said.
The Ghana Education Service has been urged to implement policies addressing teenage pregnancy and supporting young mothers in education. Child rights advocates highlight the importance of protecting these girls’ rights to education and a brighter future.
The BECE is a critical milestone, determining senior high school placement. The pregnant students and nursing mothers are determined to excel, with some receiving community support.
“We are committed to supporting these girls to achieve their educational goals,” said a local NGO representative.
