Floodwaters Engulf Keta Township, Leaving Trail of Destruction

Heavy rainfall has submerged parts of Keta township in the Volta Region, displacing residents, destroying property, and disrupting livelihoods. According to #CitiNewsroom, the flooding has affected several areas, including Dzelukope, Nukpesekope, Tetekope, and Vui.

The Keta Municipal Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are assessing the damage and providing support to affected individuals. Mr. Emmanuel Tordzro of the Keta Ambulance Service emphasized the need for urgent infrastructure improvements to mitigate the impact of future floods.

Residents have blamed the flooding on neglected drainage infrastructure and poor town planning. “Every year it is the same story,” said Mr. Richard Aba, a resident of Dzelukope. “We need a proper drainage system to at least mitigate the situation.”

The flooding has also affected several institutional offices, including the Ambulance Service, Fire Service, and Environmental Service. Mr. Philip Abotsi, Deputy Director of NADMO, called for immediate relief measures and long-term flood mitigation strategies.

Keta’s vulnerability to flooding is exacerbated by its low-lying geography and coastal erosion. The area has experienced similar flooding in the past, with several communities displaced and infrastructure damaged.
