President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were swiftly escorted out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., after shots were fired near the main security screening area, sending shockwaves through the gathering of journalists, politicians, and celebrities. According to CNN, the Secret Service acted quickly, evacuating the President, Vice President, and other top officials, including Cabinet members, to a secure location.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with attendees taking cover under tables and screaming as Secret Service agents rushed to respond to the threat. “Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The shooting incident occurred shortly after 8:40 p.m. EDT, with the suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, firing at least one shot near the magnetometer screening area. A Secret Service agent was struck in the bullet-resistant vest but is expected to recover. The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the incident.
Trump later addressed the press, stating that the suspect is believed to be a lone individual and that the event would be rescheduled within 30 days. “The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition,” Trump assured.
The White House Correspondents’ Association president, Weijia Jiang, announced that the program would continue momentarily, but attendees were later ordered to leave the premises.
