Democracy Under Siege: Bawumia Sounds Alarm

Ghana’s democratic institutions are facing unprecedented threats, Former Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has warned. According to #MetroNews, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over what he perceives as a concerted effort to undermine the country’s democratic architecture.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks come amidst controversy surrounding the Kpandai parliamentary seat, which was declared vacant by Parliament. The former Vice President has questioned the haste with which the seat was declared vacant, arguing that it undermines the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
“The NDC doesn’t want me to win the NPP flagbearer race; that’s why they’re campaigning for some of my opponents. They know that if I win the flagbearer race, I will win the 2028 elections,” Dr. Bawumia stated, suggesting that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is afraid of his potential victory in the 2028 elections.
Dr. Bawumia’s concerns are not limited to the Kpandai controversy. He has also expressed alarm over reports of government raids on homes of former officials, attacks on journalists, and the use of the military in ways that resemble a “military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition”.
The former Vice President’s warnings have sparked intense debate, with some arguing that Ghana’s democracy is indeed under threat, while others see it as a partisan rhetoric. As the country navigates these challenges, one thing is clear: Ghana’s democratic future hangs in the balance.
