The Anloga District in Ghana’s Volta Region is reeling from the devastating impact of tidal waves, which have displaced over 2,000 people and left a trail of destruction in their wake. According to #MetroNews, the waves have broken through the land separating the sea from the Volta River, creating a large opening and putting nearby communities at risk of flooding.
The affected communities, including Fuveme, Dzaflagbey, and Kporkporgbor, are facing an uncertain future as authorities struggle to contain the situation. The District Chief Executive for Anloga, Sandra Seyram Kpedor, has attributed the destruction to a blockage around the estuary and called for urgent dredging and protective measures to prevent further flooding.
Residents and local leaders are echoing the call for help, with Assemblyman for the Attiteti Electoral Area, Raphael Agbanavor, lamenting the loss of communities and appealing for government intervention to protect the remaining settlements. “In fact, three communities have already gone, and we are left with one. We are appealing that this one that is left needs to be protected, people need to be protected and livelihoods need to be protected too,” he said.
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has visited the area and described the scenes as “deeply disturbing,” warning that surrounding communities, including Anyanui, are under threat. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has warned that the situation could worsen if urgent action is not taken.
The government has been urged to take immediate action to protect the affected communities and prevent further displacement. Efforts are underway to assess the damage and provide support to those affected.
