Ghana Urged to Criminalize Ecocide Amid Environmental Concerns

Ghana is being called upon to take urgent action to protect its natural resources and ecosystems from large-scale destruction. Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has moved a motion in Parliament, advocating for the introduction of legislation to make ecocide a criminal offence under Ghanaian law.
According to #OkayfmNews, the move is in response to the growing concern over the severe harm caused to the environment and the need for strong legal measures to tackle the destruction of ecosystems. Annoh-Dompreh stressed that Ghana must align with the global movement advocating for the criminalization of ecocide, both at the national level and under international law.
The Minority Chief Whip emphasized the need for a firm national commitment to protecting the country’s biodiversity and ecological balance. He urged the government to support international efforts aimed at recognizing ecocide as a crime globally, stating that such measures would strengthen environmental protection and hold individuals and institutions accountable for actions that lead to severe environmental damage.
The call for legislation comes amidst growing concerns over the impact of human activities on the environment, including deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Ghana is home, however, with several environmental challenges, including deforestation and pollution, highlighting the need for urgent action.
