Ghana-France Naval Ties Strengthen Amid Security Concerns

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon Ernest Brogya Genfi, has reaffirmed Ghana’s strong military ties with France during a courtesy visit to the French Navy offshore patrol vessel Commandant Bouan at the Port of Tema. The ship is operating in Ghana’s territorial waters to enhance maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and strengthen naval cooperation between the two countries.
According to the Ghana Ministry of Defence, the vessel, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Damien Tocquer, has conducted joint counter-piracy patrols with the Ghana Navy and will undertake further training to boost interoperability and operational effectiveness. The visit was also attended by the French Ambassador to Ghana, HE Diana Dime Labille, and senior military officers.
The Deputy Minister expressed concern over rising high-sea robberies targeting artisanal fishermen, noting that maritime insecurity, like terrorism in the sub-region, remains a shared threat. He called for greater international support, particularly advanced surveillance equipment, to combat these threats.
The Commandant Bouan, an 83-metre vessel crewed by 104 personnel, arrived from Gabon and will remain in Ghanaian waters until 6 March 2026 before sailing to Guinea-Conakry. Its presence underscores the importance of cooperation in addressing maritime security challenges in the region.
The visit highlights the strong partnership between Ghana and France in the defence sector, with ongoing technical support and joint exercises. The collaboration is expected to enhance the capacity of the Ghana Navy to tackle maritime security threats.
The French Navy’s presence in the Gulf of Guinea is part of efforts to promote stability and security in the region.
