Ghanaian Men Shun Condoms Over Size Concerns

The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed that some Ghanaian men are avoiding condoms because they claim the sizes available are too small, contributing to low usage rates among certain groups, particularly young men. According to the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Prosper Akanbong, feedback gathered from various engagements and field interactions suggests that concerns about condom fit are a significant factor in this trend.

Speaking in an interview, Dr. Akanbong stated that the commission is looking into developing larger condom sizes for Ghanaian males. “We have gotten to know that there were some times that there were condoms in the system, but they said they were smaller for Ghanaian men, and then they were bursting because Ghanaian men are quite endowed,” he revealed.

The commission is set to launch a National Condom and Lubricant Strategy to address concerns about access, suitability, and public preference. According to Dr. Akanbong, the strategy will be informed by nationwide data on how Ghanaians perceive condom use.

The Ghana AIDS Commission is working to increase condom use, especially during the Valentine’s period, when many people celebrate romantic relationships. As part of efforts to promote safe sex and reduce the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, the commission will distribute thousands of condoms and HIV test kits across the country.

The commission’s initiative is part of broader efforts to prevent the transmission and spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly during festive periods when the risk of unsafe sex may increase. Dr. Akanbong emphasized the importance of protection, urging Ghanaians to use condoms consistently and correctly.
