University Staff Down Tools Over Poor Conditions

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has declared an indefinite strike, effective immediately, citing poor conditions of service as the reason. According to the association, the decision was made after years of failed negotiations with the government and university management.
The strike, which began today, is expected to disrupt academic activities across the country’s public universities. SSA-UoG members, who include administrators, accountants, and other support staff, are demanding improvements in their salaries, allowances, and working conditions.
“The situation has become unbearable, and we have no choice but to take drastic action,” said a spokesperson for SSA-UoG. The association is calling on the government to address their grievances and provide a comprehensive package to improve their conditions of service.
According to SSA-UoG, the government’s failure to address their concerns is a clear indication of the lack of commitment to the development of the country’s education sector. The association is urging students, parents, and the general public to support their cause.
The strike comes at a time when the country’s universities are facing numerous challenges, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and low staff morale. The SSA-UoG’s action is likely to exacerbate the situation, with students facing uncertain academic calendars and potential delays in completing their programs.
The government has been urged to engage with the SSA-UoG leadership to resolve the impasse and find a mutually acceptable solution. As the standoff continues, students and staff are left to wonder when normalcy will return to the country’s universities.
