Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit aimed at seeking clarity and justice over the tragic death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia. According to the Diplomatic Times, Ablakwa is leading a six-member delegation, including senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a forensic expert, and a pathologist.
The visit comes amid sustained appeals from Nana Agyei’s family, who have rejected an initial report by Latvian authorities suggesting their son died by suicide after falling from his sixth-floor apartment. The family insists there may have been foul play, raising concerns that he could have been poisoned following an alleged incident of racial abuse.
Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old first-year Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University, died on June 4, 2025. His family received news that he had fallen from the sixth floor of his apartment, but they dispute this claim, citing gaps in the investigation and alleged police cover-up.
According to Ghana News, the family had sent a voice note claiming he had been poisoned just three days before his death. Ablakwa has assured Ghanaians that Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže, has conveyed firm assurances that her government will fully cooperate with Ghana in the pursuit of truth and justice.
The Ghanaian government has denied allegations that it demanded payment from the family for travel arrangements, stating that all expenses are being covered. The Ministry has appealed to the public to allow due process to proceed, assuring continued support for the family and efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
