Bawumia Will Never Be President – Victoria Duncan-Williams

Victoria Duncan-Williams, sister of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has sparked controversy with her assertion that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will never become President of Ghana. According to the 1957News, Duncan-Williams made the comment after Bawumia won the NPP presidential primary, stating that he came to destroy the party just like his father destroyed the United Party (UP).
Duncan-Williams expressed her disappointment in the NPP delegates, saying “Fear delegates. I’m really surprised at the delegates again. I told them the last time that ‘if you bring Bawumia, you’d go to the opposition’ and they are bringing back Bawumia.” She emphasized that Bawumia’s religious affiliation as a Muslim makes him an unlikely winner in a predominantly Christian country.
According to Duncan-Williams, Christians make up 75% of Ghana’s population, while Muslims constitute 14%, making it difficult for a Muslim candidate to win. “There’s no way, anywhere in this world, that the majority will let a minority lead,” she said. Her comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some accusing her of being discriminatory.
Bawumia has previously rejected claims that religion determines electoral outcomes in Ghana and has cautioned against using religious or tribal considerations in political campaigning. The NPP has yet to respond to Duncan-Williams’ comments.
The controversy highlights the ongoing debate about the role of religion in Ghanaian politics. With the 2024 general elections approaching, the issue is likely to remain a contentious topic.
