Widow’s Bid to Succeed Late Husband in Ayawaso East

Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late Ayawaso East Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, has announced her intention to contest the upcoming by-election, seeking to fill the seat left vacant by her husband’s passing. According to Citi Newsroom, Hajia Amina Adam made the announcement, citing consultations with community leaders, party members, and residents of the constituency as the driving force behind her decision.
The late MP, who served four terms and secured a resounding victory in the 2024 general elections with over 70% of the vote, left a significant vacuum in the National Democratic Congress’s stronghold within the capital. Hajia Amina Adam’s decision to contest the seat is seen as a bid to continue her husband’s legacy and ensure continuity in the constituency’s representation.
According to MyJoyOnline, Baba Jamal, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has also thrown his hat into the ring, making the contest a competitive one. Other potential candidates mentioned include Najib Mohammed Sani and Dr. Yakubu M. Azindow, who contested the late MP in the last NDC parliamentary primary.
Hajia Amina Adam’s supporters argue that she is the best fit to succeed her husband, citing her active involvement in party activities and her contributions during the 2024 general election. They believe her familiarity with the constituency’s developmental and social issues makes her an ideal candidate.
The Electoral Commission has set March 3, 2026, as the date for the by-election, with nominations expected to open in early February. The filing fee for the by-election is GH¢10,000.
As the NDC prepares for the by-election, the party’s regional executives have not yet officially sanctioned any specific candidate, maintaining that they are focused on the final funeral rites of the late MP.
