Scandal: Metro Mass Transit Buses Sold at 2,500.00

Scandal Rocks Metro Mass Transit Over Sale of Unserviceable Buses

Metro Mass Transit Limited has been embroiled in controversy following revelations that it sold 313 unserviceable buses for GHC2,500 each in October 2020. The disclosure was made by the Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Ltd, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, sparking outrage and calls for a probe into the deal.

According to MyJoyOnline, the buses were auctioned off, generating approximately GHC30 million for the company. However, critics argue that the sale was financially questionable, given the original value of the buses and their condition. The move has reignited debate over the management of state transport assets and raised concerns about transparency and accountability.

The buses in question were reportedly Yaxin and Iveco models acquired in 2003, which had served their economic lifespan and were classified as scrap metal. Ahmed Arthur, former Board Chairman of Metro Mass Transit Company Limited, defended the sale, stating that the buses had been cannibalized and were no longer fit for road use ¹ ².

The sale has sparked calls for a forensic audit into the disposal of public buses, with critics demanding greater transparency and accountability in the management of state-owned enterprises. The controversy has also raised questions about the valuation process and whether the buses were sold at a fair price.

The incident highlights the challenges facing Metro Mass Transit, which has been working to improve its services and fleet. The company has acquired new buses and is implementing measures to enhance operational efficiency.

According to Ghananewsonline, the sale has fueled renewed scrutiny of the government’s management of public assets, with critics arguing that undervaluation and poor oversight may have led to significant losses for the state.
