CAF Slams Samuel Eto'o with Four-Match Ban and $20,000 Fine

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed a four-match suspension and a $20,000 fine to Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), for misconduct during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal match between Cameroon and Morocco.
According to CAF, Eto’o was found guilty of violating the principles of sportsmanship set out in Article 2(3) of the CAF Statutes and Article 82 of the CAF Disciplinary Code for his behavior during the match. The incident occurred when Eto’o was seen gesturing angrily towards Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa and CAF president Patrice Motsepe over refereeing decisions.
FECAFOOT has expressed strong reservations about the decision, stating that it “lacks any explicit justification” and raises concerns about the fairness of the disciplinary process. The federation has also announced its intention to appeal the decision, with Eto’o’s leadership and standing at the continental level hanging in the balance.
The CAF Disciplinary Board imposed the sanction following an investigation into incidents during the AFCON quarterfinal matches, including the Cameroon-Morocco game. Eto’o’s behavior has been widely criticized, and this is not his first brush with disciplinary action.
FECAFOOT has reiterated its support for Eto’o, emphasizing its commitment to credible and transparent disciplinary standards in African football. The federation’s statement highlighted concerns about the expedited procedure leading to the decision, which it believes undermines the fundamental requirements of a fair trial.
The development adds to the controversy surrounding AFCON, with scrutiny intensifying over officiating standards and disciplinary consistency.
