Lawyers Demand Answers on Detained Bawku Chief’s Whereabouts

Lawyers representing Alhaji Seidu Abagri, the removed Bawku Chief, have filed a lawsuit against the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the Interior Ministry. The lawyers are seeking to know Abagri’s whereabouts and demand access to him.
According to TV3 News, Abagri was removed from Bawku by the Ghana Armed Forces on December 24, 2025, following a mediation report by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on the Bawku chieftaincy conflict. The report recommended Abagri’s removal and his recall to Nalerigu, the seat of the Nayiri, to be reassigned a different traditional role.
The Interior Ministry confirmed Abagri’s removal, stating he is safe and in the custody of security officials. However, his lawyers are concerned about his well-being and are pushing for access to him.
The Bawku chieftaincy dispute has been ongoing, with tensions between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups. The Asantehene’s mediation report affirmed Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba, and the government has assured efforts to restore peace and stability in the region ¹ ² ³.
The lawsuit highlights concerns about Abagri’s rights and the rule of law. The outcome of the case is being closely watched, given the sensitive nature of the Bawku chieftaincy issue.
