Accra Mayor Cracks Down on Unapproved Fares

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, led a taskforce operation targeting commercial drivers charging unapproved fares, resulting in the arrest of six drivers in the Central Business District. The operation, which began around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, covered major routes, including Kwame Nkrumah Avenue and Farisco traffic light, where passenger traffic is usually high.
The arrested drivers were later cautioned and pardoned by the Mayor, who emphasized that this was just the beginning of intensified monitoring and stricter action against offenders. Mayor Allotey stressed that sustained enforcement is necessary to ensure fairness in public transport pricing and deter drivers from exploiting commuters.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reiterated its commitment to protecting commuters from exploitation, urging drivers to adhere to approved fares. Passengers are encouraged to report any instances of overcharging to the authorities.
The AMA has warned that enforcement will be intensified across the metropolis, with strict monitoring and penalties for defaulters. The Mayor’s team will continue to verify fares with passengers to ensure compliance.
The public is encouraged to support the AMA’s efforts by reporting any drivers charging unapproved fares. Together, we can ensure a fair and orderly public transport system in Accra.
