North Korea and Russia Bound in ‘Blood’ of War

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a New Year’s message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting the strengthened ties between their countries through “sharing blood, life and death in the same trench” in the Ukraine war. Kim described 2025 as a “really meaningful year” for bilateral ties, calling relations between Moscow and Pyongyang a “precious common asset to be carried forward forever”

The message comes after Putin praised the “heroic” role played by North Korean troops in Russia’s Kursk region, solidifying their alliance. North Korea has deployed thousands of troops to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, with at least nine soldiers killed in combat. In return, Russia has provided financial aid, military technology, and food and energy supplies to North Korea.

The alliance between North Korea and Russia has raised concerns among the international community, with the US and its partners warning about the security implications of the arms transfers. Kim’s message was sent a day after he instructed officials to increase missile production, highlighting North Korea’s continued focus on strengthening its military capabilities.

The cooperation between North Korea and Russia is seen as a challenge to US and South Korean influence in the region. The two countries have deepened their military cooperation, with North Korea sending troops, artillery shells, missiles, and long-range rocket systems to Russia.

The situation remains tense, with both countries expected to continue their cooperation. The international community is closely watching the developments, with many concerned about the implications for global security.
