Government Disburses ₵139m LEAP Grants to Support Vulnerable Households

The Government of Ghana has disbursed ₵139.33 million under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to support 350,580 vulnerable households across the country, benefiting an estimated 1.5 million people. This forms part of the 99th cycle of LEAP cash grant payments, aimed at cushioning extremely poor and vulnerable households against economic hardship.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, announced that the disbursement demonstrates the government’s commitment to serving the extremely poor and vulnerable through responsive and reliable social interventions. The 2025 national budget significantly increased funding for the LEAP programme, allowing the government to expand coverage and strengthen its impact.

The LEAP programme provides cash transfers to help improve living conditions, support basic needs such as nutrition, health, and education, and promote investment in small income-generating activities. Beneficiaries include households with orphans and vulnerable children, elderly persons aged 65 years and above without caregivers, persons with severe disabilities, and extremely poor pregnant and lactating women with infants.

The government has allocated ₵953.5 million to the LEAP programme in 2025, a significant increase from ₵728.8 million in 2024. The programme is expected to expand to 400,000 households in subsequent payment cycles. Dr. Lartey urged beneficiaries to prioritize household nutrition, children’s education, and investment in income-generating activities.

The nationwide disbursement, which began on December 23, 2025, aims to provide essential support to beneficiary households, enabling them to participate more meaningfully in the Christmas festivities and approach the New Year with dignity and hope.
