50 Large-Scale Mining Licenses Face Revocation Over Regulatory Breaches

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is set to revoke 50 large-scale mining licenses due to various regulatory breaches. This decision follows a thorough review of large-scale mining operations conducted by a special committee appointed by the Ministry.

The breaches include holding leases without valid Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) or Water Resources Commission (WRC) permits. The Ministry has emphasized that this move is part of the government’s multi-pronged strategy to address illegalities plaguing the mining sector.

A similar exercise targeting small-scale mining licenses resulted in the revocation of 278 licenses. The Ministry has affirmed its commitment to continuing regulatory exercises to ensure the holistic sanitization of Ghana’s mining sector.

The affected companies have been given a one-month grace period to rectify any anomalies. Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah directed the committee to announce the final list of affected companies in due course.

This move signals the government’s commitment to tightening oversight in the mining sector, ensuring safer, more responsible, and environmentally sustainable operations.
