Dafeamekpor Accuses GBA Of Becoming NPP Platform

Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi Member of Parliament Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has accused the Ghana Bar Association of increasingly becoming a platform for concerns raised by members and sympathisers of the opposition New Patriotic Party.

The lawmaker made the observation in Accra while reacting to recent pronouncements of the Bar on national political and legal matters, arguing that the Association appears to be departing from its nonpartisan professional mandate. He contended that its public advocacy increasingly mirrors partisan talking points.

Dafeamekpor asserted that the Bar, which should serve as the collective voice of legal practitioners and guardian of rule of law, risks eroding its credibility when perceived as ideologically aligned. He called for introspection within the leadership to restore neutrality and ensure that interventions reflect broad professional consensus rather than narrow political sympathy.

According to official parliamentary proceedings, the Majority Chief Whip insisted that the GBA must demonstrate independence by equally scrutinising all political actors and resisting capture by partisan interests. He cautioned that selective commentary undermines public trust in the legal profession.

The Ghana Bar Association has historically played a pivotal role in constitutional development, democratic accountability and judicial reforms, often issuing communiques on governance excesses and human rights. Its recent statements on electoral disputes and executive decisions have drawn sharp reactions from both sides of the political divide.

Observers note that tensions between Parliament and professional bodies have intensified amid polarised national discourse, with calls for institutional restraint. The Bar is yet to officially respond to the latest critique, though insiders maintain that its positions are driven by legal principle rather than political allegiance.
