Ghana’s VP Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang Pledges Support for Diaspora Engagement
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening diaspora-friendly policies and expanding clear pathways for investment and collaboration. Closing the two-day Diaspora Summit 2025 in Accra, she emphasized the crucial role of the African diaspora in Ghana’s economic recovery, historical justice, and long-term transformation agenda
The Vice President described the diaspora as Ghana’s 17th region, highlighting their significant contributions to the country’s development through remittances, skills transfer, investment, advocacy, and cultural preservation. She urged sustained collaboration and concrete action, citing ongoing national initiatives aimed at economic revitalization and agricultural transformation as opportunities for diaspora participation.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that Ghana’s Reset Ghana agenda is gradually restoring macroeconomic stability, with declining inflation, improving reserves, and returning investor confidence. She called on the diaspora to help consolidate these gains, emphasizing that the government’s commitment to diaspora engagement is not just rhetoric, but a deliberate strategy for national development.
The Vice President also highlighted President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership on reparations, stating that Ghana’s pursuit of historical justice is a moral imperative that requires structure, persistence, and credible leadership. She emphasized that reparations are not abstract moral claims, but complex political, economic, and historical issues.
The Diaspora Summit 2025 marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s engagement with its global diaspora, laying the foundation for a comprehensive framework to mainstream diaspora participation in national development. The government has announced plans to roll out an e-visa policy in the first quarter of 2026, with special dispensations for Africans in the diaspora, to facilitate easier travel to Ghana.
