NPP National Women’s Organizer aspirant Hawa Koomson has said she wants to return to power because life in opposition has made the New Patriotic Party miserable, while also promising practical protection for women. The former Awutu Senya East MP made the remarks in an interview monitored on GHOne TV and EIB Network under #GHOneNews and #NewsAlert.
“I want to be back in power because opposition has made us [NPP] miserable,” Hawa Koomson stated, reflecting growing frustration within the NPP after losing government. She said the experience in opposition has affected morale and resources, and a return to power would allow the party to implement its programmes for women and youth more effectively.

In the same interview, the aspirant pledged bold safety measures for Ghanaian women. “I’ll make sure every woman is given pepper spray to protect herself when I’m elected. I’ll also teach you how to stand up for yourself and be tough,” she declared. She justified the proposal with a personal testimony from the recent Ablekuma North rerun violence.
“If I had not carried pepper spray with me, I would have died in the Ablekuma North rerun assault,” Hawa Koomson recounted. According to her, the experience proved that women in politics and electoral work face real physical dangers and need practical self-defense tools. The Ablekuma North rerun, which trended heavily on GHOne TV, was marred by reports of assault and intimidation.

Her dual comments have drawn mixed reactions within the NPP base. Supporters describe Hawa Koomson as bold and practical, noting her experience as former Minister for Fisheries and Special Development Initiatives. Critics, however, say distributing pepper spray on a national scale raises legal and safety concerns and want more details on regulation, training, and funding.
Hawa Koomson is contesting for NPP National Women’s Organizer, a key role responsible for mobilizing women across all 16 regions. She argues her tough leadership and grassroots experience make her ideal to energize the women’s wing, restore morale after the opposition setback, and prepare for the 2028 general election. The GHOne TV interview continues to trend under #EIBNetwork and #GHOneTV.
