Ho Drivers Charge Unauthorised Fares Ahead Of Schedule
Drivers at Ho main lorry station charged GHS 80 instead of the approved GHS 60 from Ho to Accra on 23rd September 2026, three days before the approved 8% fare adjustment is set to take effect on 26th September 2026. The early hike triggered complaints among passengers who said the move violated official directives.
According to Joyce Kpagah, a passenger who boarded at Ho yesterday, drivers insisted on GHS 80 while others who pleaded anonymity said they were told to pay the new price or disembark. The commuters are calling on the Ministry of Transport and the Ho Municipal Chief Executive to intervene and stop drivers from charging unapproved fares ahead of schedule.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union has confirmed an 8% upward adjustment nationwide effective 26th September 2026, but passengers argue that Ho drivers jumped the date and inflated the rate from GHS 60 to GHS 80 instead of applying the approved 8% increment. The difference represents more than 30% increase on the Ho to Accra route.
Transport fare regulation in Ghana is governed by negotiations between GPRTU, the Ministry and transport operators before gazetting for public compliance. The system is similar to other national structured frameworks such as CSSPS which handles transparent second cycle school placement, WASSCE grading from A1 to F9 for tertiary admission, Free SHS policy that removes fee barriers, Energy Commission licensing that regulates electricians, and Minerals and Mining laws that penalize illegal mining known as Galamsey to protect environment.
Passengers say they expect the Ho Municipal Assembly and the Volta Regional branch of GPRTU to enforce compliance, paste approved fare list at stations and sanction drivers who charged GHS 80 on 23rd September ahead of the 26th September effective date. They note that early implementation creates confusion and extortion.
Authorities are being urged to act quickly to revert fares to GHS 60 until 26th September and ensure any new increase reflects only the approved 8% adjustment communicated by the union.
