Ghana and Burkina Faso have signed seven agreements aimed at boosting cooperation in various sectors, including security, transportation, and disaster management. The agreements were signed during the two-day official visit of Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to Burkina Faso.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreements include the Mutual Recognition of National Driver’s Licenses, Transport and Road Transit, and Framework Agreement on Cross-border cooperation. Others are the establishment of periodic consultation frameworks between border administrative authorities, reaffirmation of the border between the two countries, cooperation on disaster prevention and management, and fighting illicit drug trafficking.
The agreements are expected to enhance economic cooperation, promote trade, and improve the overall relationship between the two West African nations. The discussions also focused on security cooperation, with both countries condemning recent terrorist attacks in the sub-region and resolving to design a strengthened bilateral security framework.
“The importance of security cooperation between the two countries featured prominently in the discussions,” said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both countries also agreed to establish a reinforced partnership on disaster prevention, early warning coordination, and crisis response, particularly in light of the recurring humanitarian challenges caused by the Bagré Dam spillage.
The agreements mark a significant milestone in Ghana-Burkina Faso relations, with both countries committed to deepening their cooperation. The reactivation of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) is expected to provide a framework for regular dialogue and collaboration.
The agreements are expected to be implemented in the coming months, with both countries working together to address common challenges and promote regional integration.
