National Security Operatives Assault Retired Police Officer

A retired police officer, Chief Inspector Seibu Sidi, has been brutally assaulted by National Security operatives in the Ashanti Region, sparking widespread outrage and calls for accountability. According to #CitiNewsroom, the incident occurred when the operatives, dressed in military camouflage, arrived at Sidi’s wood business in Trede, claiming to be tracking a vehicle linked to suspicious activity.

The retired officer, who questioned the operatives’ presence, was pinned to the ground and flogged, with bystanders pleading for restraint. A viral video shows Sidi being beaten, while his daughter’s phone was allegedly damaged during the incident. The Ashanti Regional Deputy Security Coordinator, Alhassan Tapsoba, condemned the conduct of the operatives, stating that the case has been escalated to national authorities in Accra.

According to #TheGuardian, the National Security Coordinator is “not happy” about the incident and has intervened, with the officers involved to be invited for questioning. Sidi alleged that he was forced to pay for damages to a vehicle used in the operation before his own car was released, describing the experience as traumatic.

The incident has raised concerns about human rights violations and the conduct of security personnel. The National Security Secretariat has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation, with the officers involved identified.
