Akufo-Addo Leads ECOWAS Mission to Benin Elections

 

 

Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has arrived in Cotonou, Benin, to head the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission ahead of the country’s presidential election on April 12, 2026. According to Akufo-Addo, he is leading a multidisciplinary delegation of observers to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

 

The delegation comprises twenty long-term observers, eighty short-term observers, and twenty-five young professionals who will be deployed across Benin to monitor the electoral process. Akufo-Addo emphasized his commitment to working with the Republic of Benin to uphold the will of the people.

 

The presidential election is expected to feature two main candidates: Romuald Wadagni, backed by the ruling coalition, and Paul Hounkpè, the opposition candidate. The election is seen as crucial for Benin’s democratic consolidation and regional stability.

 

ECOWAS has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Benin’s electoral process, citing the importance of promoting democracy and good governance in West Africa. The mission will assess compliance with electoral laws and international best practices.

 

The observation mission is part of ECOWAS’ broader efforts to promote democratic governance and stability in the region. Akufo-Addo’s leadership is seen as a significant boost to the mission’s credibility.
