Teacher Recruitment Shortfall Sparks Concerns

The recruitment of 7,000 teachers, announced by the government, is woefully inadequate to address the country’s pressing teacher shortage, says Divine Nanija, President of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana. The association is calling for a more comprehensive approach to address the issue.

According to Nanija, the government’s recruitment drive is a drop in the ocean, given the thousands of schools and classrooms across the country that are in dire need of qualified teachers. She emphasized that the association is not opposed to the recruitment exercise, but it must be done in a way that addresses the real needs of the education sector.

The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana is urging the government to prioritize education and allocate more resources to the sector. Nanija stressed that the lack of teachers is having a negative impact on the quality of education, and it’s imperative that the government takes concrete steps to address the issue.

“The recruitment of 7,000 teachers is a good start, but it’s not enough,” said Nanija. “We need a comprehensive plan to address the teacher shortage, and it must be done now.”

The teacher shortage has been a longstanding issue in Ghana, with many schools struggling to attract and retain qualified teachers. The situation is more acute in rural areas, where schools often lack basic amenities and infrastructure.
