Church Building Collapse Traps Worshippers in Accra

A devastating incident occurred at Accra New Town when an old school building being used as a makeshift church collapsed, trapping several worshippers inside. The incident happened on Sunday, March 29, 2026, around 1:00 p.m., sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting an urgent rescue response.

According to UTV Ghana, the structure gave way while members of the church were inside, leaving several people trapped under the debris. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with emergency responders and local residents working together to pull survivors from the rubble. The Ghana Police Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, and Ghana National Fire Service have taken control of the scene.

“It was a chaotic scene, people were crying and screaming for help,” said a witness. “We are trying to help with the rescue efforts, but it’s slow going.”

The incident has raised concerns over building safety and structural integrity in the area, particularly given Ghana’s history of building collapses. In recent months, several buildings have collapsed, resulting in loss of life and injuries.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service, at least 10 people have been rescued so far, but the total number of individuals trapped or injured is still unknown. The rescue operation is ongoing, with efforts focused on reaching those still trapped.

As the rescue operation continues, the community is in shock, and anxious onlookers are gathering, hoping for more survivors to be pulled from the rubble.
