Jehovah’s Witnesses Relax Blood Transfusion Stance

In a landmark shift, Jehovah’s Witnesses have updated their long-standing policy on blood transfusions, allowing members to have their own blood removed, stored, and reinfused during medical procedures. According to #GHOneNews, the decision marks a significant departure from the group’s previous stance, which prohibited blood transfusions.

Gerrit Losch, a member of the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses, announced the change, emphasizing individual responsibility. “Each Christian must decide for himself how his blood will be used in medical and surgical care,” he said. The update permits autologous transfusions, where a patient’s own blood is used, but maintains the prohibition on receiving blood from other donors.

The policy shift has drawn mixed reactions, with some former members criticizing it as insufficient. Mitch Melon, a former member, argued that the change doesn’t grant complete freedom of conscience to accept life-saving interventions involving donated blood. The update is seen as a response to ongoing legal and ethical debates surrounding the group’s stance on blood transfusions.

Historically, Jehovah’s Witnesses have viewed blood transfusions as violating biblical commands to abstain from blood. The group’s core belief regarding the sanctity of blood remains unchanged, a spokesperson emphasized. The update is expected to influence how members approach planned medical procedures.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses have approximately nine million followers worldwide, with 144,000 members in the UK. The policy change follows high-profile legal clashes, including a December 2025 Edinburgh court ruling allowing doctors to administer a blood transfusion to a 14-year-old Jehovah’s Witness girl if her life was at risk.
