Borno Politics Heats Up as Zulum’s Succession Looms

The countdown to the 2027 general elections in Nigeria’s Borno State has begun, and the political temperature is rising. With Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s tenure set to expire in May 2027, the scramble for his succession has intensified, with various interest groups jostling for position.

According to #DailyTrust, several prominent politicians are vying for the top spot, including Ali Bukar Dalori, the Deputy National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan; and Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno. Other contenders include Lawan Abba Wakilbe, the Commissioner of Education, and Bukar Adam Bababe, the Executive Secretary of the Borno Geographical Information Service.

Governor Zulum has maintained that he does not have a preferred successor, emphasizing the need for a transparent and democratic process. “I have no candidate for any position, and I do not know who will succeed me. I have entrusted the choice of leaders to Almighty Allah, in line with the democratic will of party members and the people of Borno State,” he said.

The governor’s declaration has sparked skepticism, with some analysts suggesting that it may be a tactical move to create space for his preferred candidate. Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima, a native of Borno, is expected to play a significant role in shaping the state’s political landscape.

As the election draws near, the stakes are high, and the competition is expected to be fierce. The outcome will depend on various factors, including party dynamics, elite consensus, and the influence of prominent political figures.
