Mahama Demands Swift Justice Reforms to Restore Public Confidence
President John Dramani Mahama has challenged the Judiciary to embark on far reaching reforms that enhance efficiency, integrate appropriate technology and democratise access to justice for all Ghanaians. The President framed judicial renewal as indispensable to democratic consolidation and citizen trust in the rule of law.
Speaking at the swearing in of three new Supreme Court Justices in Accra, President Mahama asserted that public confidence in the bench transcends the erudition of judgements and encompasses judicial deportment, accessibility of courts and expeditious adjudication. He warned that institutional credibility falters when litigants encounter opacity, prohibitive distance or undue procedural complexity.
According to #MahamaThePresident, the President expressed profound disquiet over protracted litigation, avoidable adjournments and tardiness in delivering judgements, cautioning that such inertia erodes trust and could amount to a denial of justice itself. He maintained that justice delayed corrodes economic activity, prolongs human suffering and diminishes faith in constitutional governance.
President Mahama further entreated the Supreme Court to ensure clarity, coherence and doctrinal consistency in its pronouncements, providing dependable jurisprudential guidance for lower courts, public institutions, practitioners and ordinary citizens. He emphasised that well reasoned decisions reduce conflicting interpretations and foster uniformity across the judicial hierarchy.
The call comes amid heightened expectation for digitalisation of case management, virtual hearings and robust accountability mechanisms within the justice sector. Stakeholders anticipate that the President’s exhortation will catalyse institutional reforms aimed at decongesting dockets, curtailing adjournment culture and positioning the Judiciary as a responsive, people centred arm of state.
