In a decisive victory, Mawunyo Agbe has been re-elected as the Presiding Member of the Ho Municipal Assembly, securing 38 yes votes in a rerun election held today, March 2, 2026. Emilia Akortia, the Municipal Electoral Officer for Ho Central, declared Agbe the Presiding Member Elect, following a controversy over the 2/3rd majority requirement.
The debate centered on whether the winner needed 29 or 30 votes, with Order 5 (2) being the contentious standing. It was eventually resolved that the winner must have at least 30 votes, including the MP of Ho Central Constituency, who doesn’t have electoral powers.
Agbe, the incumbent Presiding Member, touted his achievements, including his role in securing Assembly Member’s Allowances, while his contender, Mac-Billions Bansah, emphasized the need for consensus building and collective accomplishments. Bansah garnered 4 no votes in the rerun.
Before the decisive yes or no votes that led to Mawunyo Agbe’s landslide victory, the initial election results showed Agbe leading with 24 votes, while his challenger, Mac-Billions Bansah, secured 18 votes out of 42 valid votes cast. As neither candidate achieved the required 2/3rd majority, a re-run was necessitated. However, in a show of sportsmanship, Bansah was prevailed upon to step down, paving the way for Agbe to go unopposed in the re-run, which ultimately resulted in his decisive victory with 38 yes votes.
In his acceptance speech, Agbe called for collaboration and unity, promising refined leadership to support the Municipal Chief Executive and stakeholders in developing the municipality. The MCE, StephenAdom, urged the Assembly to enhance local revenue generation and address issues like youth drug use.
The re-election of Agbe is seen as a continuation of his leadership, which has been commended for passing a resolution on property rate collection, making Ho Municipal one of only two in the country to introduce the collection regime.
