Two Sentenced to 15 and 25 Years for Robbery in Obuasi

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has secured the conviction of two men, Francis Oppong and Francis Nyamekye, for robbery and related offences at the Bekwai Circuit Court. According to the Ghana Police Service, the duo was found guilty after a full trial and sentenced to 15 and 25 years imprisonment with hard labour, respectively.

The convicts, who are residents of Kyekyewere near Obuasi, were involved in a violent robbery that took place on December 16, 2023, targeting a small-scale miner. The victim was physically assaulted and robbed of valuable items, including a pump-action gun, a Huawei mobile phone worth GH¢1,200, 18 pounds of gold valued at approximately GH¢100,000, and cash amounting to GH¢2,000.

Investigations revealed that Oppong, who lived near the victim, had monitored the miner’s movements and provided crucial information to the gang. Nyamekye was later arrested at a private hospital in Obuasi while seeking treatment for gunshot injuries sustained during a failed robbery attempt.

The court, presided over by His Honour Mr. Isaac Appeatu Esq., handed down the sentences on January 5, 2026, and the convicts have been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to serve their terms.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the robbery. The police have called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may assist in the identification of the remaining suspects still at large.
