Akufo-Addo Leads International Observer Mission in Bangladesh

Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has taken on a key international role, leading the Commonwealth Observer Group for Bangladesh’s parliamentary election and referendum on February 12. According to Ghana Web, Akufo-Addo arrived in Dhaka on Sunday, February 8, to commence his duties.
The 14-member group, comprising experts in politics, law, media, and election administration, will observe pre-poll arrangements and ensure the electoral process is credible, transparent, and inclusive. Akufo-Addo’s team has already met with representatives of the media, civil society, youth and women’s groups, political parties, and other stakeholders.
The Commonwealth Observer Group’s mandate is to provide an independent assessment of the electoral process, in line with Bangladesh’s national laws and international standards. The mission is a significant moment in Bangladesh’s democratic journey, with the country holding its 13th parliamentary elections and a referendum on the July Charter.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey emphasized the importance of the mission, stating that credible electoral processes are crucial for strengthening democratic governance and stability. Akufo-Addo’s leadership is expected to bring expertise and impartiality to the observation process.
The Observer Group will submit a report containing its findings and recommendations to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, which will be shared with the Government of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Election Commission, and other stakeholders.
The international community is watching the situation in Bangladesh closely, with many calling for a peaceful and fair election. Akufo-Addo’s role is critical in ensuring the integrity of the process.
