Ghana-China Ties Strengthened as Vice President Bids Farewell to Outgoing Ambassador

 

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commended the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, for his dedicated service and significant contributions to strengthening Ghana-China relations. The Vice President made the commendation when Ambassador Tong Defa paid a farewell visit to her office.

According to Professor Opoku-Agyemang, the meeting provided an opportunity to review the depth of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in trade and development. She highlighted that bilateral trade between Ghana and China has reached a record US$15 billion, underscoring the growing economic ties between the two nations.

The Vice President expressed appreciation to Ambassador Tong for his role in securing two major grants for Ghana, including the construction of the Aflao Market and the Catholic Science and Technology University in Damongo. She also cited the zero-tariff agreement as one of the key achievements during his tenure.

Ambassador Tong Defa has served in Ghana for a significant period, and his departure marks the end of an era in Ghana-China relations. According to GhanaWeb, the Vice President encouraged him to carry Ghana with him as he moves on to the next stage of his diplomatic career.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed Ghana’s strong interest in expanding both trade relations and people-to-people exchanges with China. She expressed optimism about continued strong cooperation with the incoming Chinese envoy, emphasizing the importance of continuously reviewing and strengthening partnerships that are mutually beneficial.

The Vice President’s remarks underscore Ghana’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening its longstanding relationship with China.
