Haruna Iddrisu Leads in NDC Succession Polls

Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, continues to top polls as a potential successor to President John Dramani Mahama, with 30% of Ghanian voters backing him to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028. The latest Global InfoAnalytics poll shows Iddrisu’s strong performance, followed by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah with 24%, and Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson with 18% .

Iddrisu’s appeal is rooted in his regional representation and political record, making him a frontrunner among NDC supporters. He’s seen as a bridge between generations and a symbol of continuity, with strong support across swing regions, commanding nearly 48% backing.

Asiedu Nketiah, affectionately known as “General Mosquito,” is gaining momentum, with some polls showing him narrowing the gap with Iddrisu. Ato Forson’s growing popularity is tied to his technocratic expertise and youth appeal, making him a strong contender.

The NDC succession race is fluid, with a generational shift in sight. About 64% of NDC supporters favor younger candidates, reflecting a desire for new leadership energy. Iddrisu, Ato Forson, and other younger leaders account for roughly 65% of President Mahama’s 2024 voter base.

Iddrisu’s recent endorsement of Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s potential candidacy adds an interesting dynamic to the race. Her leadership and academic credentials make her a formidable candidate, particularly on education and social development issues.

The NDC’s succession contest will likely involve multiple strong candidates, with the outcome hinging on delegate support and party dynamics.
