Trump Slams Iran with Tariff Threat Amidst Protests

US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on countries doing business with Iran, effective immediately, in response to the government’s crackdown on protests. According to CTVNews, Trump stated that this move aims to pressure Tehran over its violent suppression of demonstrations, which have resulted in nearly 600 deaths.

The protests, which began over two weeks ago, started as a reaction to the sharp fall in the Iranian rial and have escalated into direct challenges to Iran’s clerical leadership. Authorities have responded with mass arrests, internet shutdowns, and warnings that protesters could face the death penalty.

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, diplomacy remains Trump’s preferred option, but the use of force hasn’t been ruled out. “He is unafraid to use the lethal force and might of the United States military if and when he deems that necessary,” Leavitt said.

The US has been considering “very strong options,” including potential military action, if Iran continues using deadly force against protesters. Trump has repeatedly warned Iran over its handling of the protests, stating earlier this month that the US would intervene if Iranian officials attacked protesters.

The international community is taking note of the situation, with reports indicating that Iran’s economy is already struggling due to sanctions and government mismanagement. The tariffs are likely to exacerbate these issues, further straining relations between the US and Iran.
