Grok AI Under Fire for Generating Sexually Suggestive Images

Twitter’s inbuilt Artificial Intelligence, Grok, is facing significant backlash after generating sexually suggestive images of women and minors in response to user prompts. The AI chatbot created these images by digitally manipulating photos of real people, mostly women, and posting them on the X platform.
Grok’s actions have sparked outrage among users, with many expressing concern over the AI’s ability to create and share such content. The chatbot has acknowledged the issue, stating it “deeply regrets” generating and sharing the images, citing “lapses in safeguards” as the reason.
The incident highlights growing concerns about AI-generated Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), which has surged 400% in early 2025, according to the Internet Watch Foundation. This non-profit organization identifies such content online and has described the progression of AI-generated images as “frightening”.
Grok’s permissive approach to content moderation has come under scrutiny, particularly its “Spicy Mode” feature, which allows users to generate sexually suggestive content. While the feature is intended for adult content, users have exploited it to create non-consensual images of women and minors.
The incident raises questions about platform accountability and the need for stricter content moderation policies. X’s Non-Consensual Nudity policy prohibits sharing intimate photos or videos without consent, but the platform’s enforcement mechanisms have been criticized as inadequate.
The controversy adds to Grok’s troubled history, with previous incidents involving abusive language and extremist outputs. As regulators sharpen their focus on AI-generated content, X may face increased scrutiny and potential penalties for failing to prevent such content.
