Police Arrest 15 in Ho Zongo Amidst Rising Tensions

The Ghana Police Service has arrested at least 15 people following sporadic gunshots and rising tensions in the Ho Zongo area. The situation is linked to a dispute over the appointment of the Volta Regional Chief Imam, with a faction of the community opposing Alhaji Muniru’s nomination.

The tensions escalated as supporters of different factions clashed, resulting in gunshots and injuries. The police have deployed personnel to the area to calm the situation and restore order. According to reports, the dispute began after the death of the former regional imam, Alhaji Hamza Danjuma, with some community members supporting Sheikh Alfa Anas as the rightful successor.

The Ho Zongo Youth Leader, Mohammed Salisu Kidzah, had warned against intimidation by security agencies or traditional authorities, emphasizing the youth’s commitment to due process. The police are investigating the incident and urge the public to remain calm.

This isn’t the first time tensions have flared in the area over such issues. In similar incidents, clashes between Muslim factions have led to injuries and arrests. The police are working to prevent further escalation and ensure peace is restored.

The situation is being closely monitored, and authorities are urging community members to resolve their differences peacefully.
