NAIMOS and Blue Water Guards Launch Major Galamsey Crackdown Along Ankobra River
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has teamed up with the Nzema-East Blue Water Guards to launch a massive crackdown on galamsey activities along the Ankobra River. The operation, which took place on January 2, 2026, is part of the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining in the country.
NAIMOS and the Blue Water Guards have been working together to dismantle galamsey sites and destroy equipment used in the illegal activity. In a previous operation, they destroyed over 100 makeshift shelters, seven dredging machines, and 23 pumping machines along the Ankobra River.
The Ankobra River has been a hotspot for galamsey activities, with severe environmental implications. The chemicals and waste from these operations have polluted the river, affecting aquatic life and the livelihoods of communities that depend on fishing and farming.
Government officials have reiterated their commitment to protecting Ghana’s water bodies and natural resources. NAIMOS has vowed to intensify collaborations with security agencies, local assemblies, and community watchdogs to uproot illegal mining networks.
The operation is part of a broader national commitment to safeguarding water bodies and preserving the environment. The government has been facing criticism for the persistence of galamsey despite efforts to combat it.
